Living Authentically – 7 Steps to Start

Now that the stage has been set in the previous letters, now it’s about taking some serious action towards living your most authentic life. No more excuses, no more settling for a life that doesn’t set your soul on fire. It’s time to create a game plan and start making real, tangible progress towards becoming the truest version of yourself.

Step one: Grab your notebook and pen, because it’s time to get real with yourself. Start by writing down your core values – the non-negotiable beliefs that guide your decisions and actions. Then, make a list of your passions and interests. What activities make you lose track of time? What topics could you talk about for hours on end? Once you have a clear picture of what matters most to you, it’s time to take a hard look at your current reality. I can’t stress enough the ability to break through barriers and stereotypes here. Regardless if you are the manliest man alive, and your true inner passion is creating frilly pink dog dresses for people’s pets – then face it, deal with it, and make it happen.

Step two: Identify the areas of your life that feel out of alignment with your authentic self. Is your job draining your soul? Are your relationships bringing you down instead of lifting you up? Are you neglecting your physical or mental health? Be honest with yourself, even if it’s uncomfortable. Change starts with awareness. Awareness creates thought, thought creates action.

Step three: Create a vision for your authentic life. What does your ideal day look like? What kind of people do you surround yourself with? What projects or hobbies are you pursuing? Write down a detailed description of what you envision your life looking like, and don’t hold back. The more specific and vivid, the better. Bring it to life in your documentation.

Step four: Break down your vision into actionable goals. What steps do you need to take to bridge the gap between your current reality and your ideal life? Make a list of short-term and long-term goals, and be sure to make them SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound). For example, instead of “start exercising,” try “go for a 30-minute jog three times a week for the next month.” You need to make sure that they are things that can be done, and can be done with discipline. Failure in the vast majority of cases can be traced back directly to a lack of discipline.

Step five: Create a daily action plan. What can you do every day to move closer to your authentic life? It could be as simple as meditating for 10 minutes in the morning, or as bold as reaching out to someone you admire for career advice. The key is to take consistent, purposeful action towards your goals. You can’t be shy, stop being weak and miserable. You are changing your life, not asking someone for an extra cup of sugar. If you can’t stand up and come out of your shell you are not going to achieve the things you want for yourself.

Step six: Find an accountability partner and surround yourself with people who support and encourage your authentic expression. This might mean distancing yourself from toxic relationships. Surrounding yourself with people who support and encourage your authentic expression can make all the difference in your journey. Accountability is something that seems to have been lost in 2024. You need to be accountable to yourself every minute of every day. Doing the things you need to do, instead of doing the things you want to do will make this process – and your transition into the person you know you can be so much easier. Don’t be afraid to reach out and make connections – you never know who might become a valuable mentor or friend.

Step seven: Embrace discomfort and celebrate your progress. Growth and change are rarely easy, but they are always worth it. When you face challenges or setbacks, remind yourself why you started this journey in the first place. Celebrate your wins, no matter how small, and use them as motivation to keep going. You only need to get 1% better every day. In 100 days, you will be 100% further along on your journey. You will be 100% more authentic than you are today. Your life should become 100% more tolerable and 100% happier.

Authentic living requires courage and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone. You might face rejection, criticism, or setbacks along the way. But remember, these challenges are opportunities for growth and self-discovery. Every obstacle you overcome makes you stronger and more resilient. It requires courage, vulnerability, and a willingness to take risks. But the rewards – a deep sense of fulfillment, purpose, and joy – are truly priceless. Living authentically is not about being perfect or having all the answers.

It’s about being true to yourself, even when it’s hard. It’s about embracing your quirks, your flaws, and your unique perspective. It’s about showing up fully and unapologetically in every area of your life. So, be brave, be bold, and be true to yourself. The world needs more authentic, passionate individuals like you.

So, what are you waiting for? Start taking action today. Write down your game plan, set your goals, and start making progress towards the life you truly want. Embrace the journey, trust your process, and never forget that you are worthy of living a life that lights you up from the inside out.
